Air Quality

A reflection of the level of pollutants in ambient air, which impact on public health and the environment. The UK Government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) published an Air Quality Strategy in July 2007, which sets out air quality objectives and policy options to improve air quality. This Air Quality Strategy sets national air quality targets for nine main air pollutants, and objectives for seven of the air pollutants have been included in regulations for local air quality management (LAQM) which local authorities work towards.

Planning Policy Statement 23, 'Planning and Pollution Control' sets out how air quality should be taken into account in the local planning system.
