Conservation

Preservation or restoration of the natural environment and wildlife. Designated nature conservation areas include: Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI); Special Areas of Conservation (SAC); Special Protection Areas (SPA); Regionally Important Geological/ Geomorphological sites (RIGS); and nature reserves. Development projects which require work in or near to designated nature conservation areas may require special provisions. When considering a project in a designated nature conservation area it is necessary to contact Natural England, Environment and Heritage Service (Northern Ireland), Scottish Natural Heritage or Countryside Council for Wales. Conservation orders also exist on buildings e.g. listed buildings.
